SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Youth CREATE have various health and issue based workshops that they can run in your school.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS
We have recently completed a Bug Busting Day project, funded by BAA, that involved many primary schools in the area. The idea was to teach the children about headlice so they wouldn't want them in their hair and would ask their parents to check and treat them as necessary!
The workshops involved film - starring primary aged members of Youth CREATE; animation, live action with songs, costumes and audience participation.
Each school received an information pack, a count down calendar to Bug Busting Day and combs for the pupils.

These workshops will be followed by ones tackling social and health & hygiene issues including thread worm.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS
We have recently completed a project focusing on an anti-smoking campaign.
The workshops tackled the issue of anti-smoking (including cannabis) but from a slightly different angle; by looking at the treatment available for cancer - the side effects of treatment and how they affect a person both emotionally, physically and socially. The whole workshop was based around choices. We worked closely with Stacey Johnson, a local 18 year old with a brain tumour and founder of the charity Kisses4Kids. She was filmed giving her account of what it's like living with cancer and how she wishes that she could have somehow lowered the chances of getting cancer by, for example, not eating chocolate! She can't understand why anybody would risk getting cancer by smoking.

The senior members of Youth CREATE were involved with developing the campaign to ensure that we could tackle the issue on a level that secondary school pupils could associate with. We were hoping to make the pupils laugh and cry; but also get involved with the anti-smoking campaign by either making a Wallace & Grommit style animation film, writing a short drama sketch/advert, a song, rap, poem or designing a poster. Above all we didn't want them to be peer pressured into smoking. Everybody has a choice.

These workshops will follow with others tackling; alcohol, STIs, stress and peer pressure/bullying.

If you want to know more about these workshops, whether you want to be involved in the making, have workshop subject suggestions or want us visit your school, please email us at: youthcreate@hotmail.co.uk
